Director of Development

Seeking highly seasoned Director of Development, with a track record of successfully driving a multi-million dollar annual campaign and leading a development team.
The Director of Development is the senior development officer of the organization with oversight of all fundraising responsibilities, including special events, major gifts and planned giving. The position also oversees the organization’s marketing operations.

Key Responsibilities
This position will serve as a key member of FSW’s executive team and will lead all aspects of fund development for the rapidly growing organization: annual campaigns, capital campaigns, endowment campaigns, planned and deferred giving, public relations, marketing communications, social media, journalism, and external communications.

  • Provide top-level thinking, analysis, and recommendations to the Board of Directors and the President & CEO regarding fund development.
  • Work with the President & CEO, Executive Committee and the Board of Directors to support aggressive goals for each fiscal year. Work collaboratively with the Development Committee, auxiliary groups and President & CEO to engage members toward goals outlined in FSW’s Strategic Plan, and specific financial goals.
  • Establish comprehensive and strategic plans for all fundraising campaigns.
  • Develop annual productivity goals with input from the Development Committee of the Board of Directors and the President & CEO. Initiate and drive data analysis and the development of metrics to capture fundraising activities, based on quantitative measures.
  • Facilitate the annual fund drives of FSW and create success in reaching financial targets. Continue to strengthen annual fundraising plan by maximizing the existing donor base as well as cultivate new donors.
  • Utilize Board members and the Development Committee and auxiliary groups such as the Junior Board and Honorary Board, to strategically align FSW with a wider pool of prospects. Develop and maintain lists for tracking and analysis.
  • Develop strategic communications and outreach plans targeting a range of constituencies through printed and digital media.
  • Improve the community branding and image of FSW.
  • Oversee events throughout the year including the annual gala. Work closely with the development department to secure honorees, guest speakers, press/media and develop materials that support fundraising efforts.
  • Oversee FSW’s online development capabilities and ensure best practices.
  • Provide oversight and strategic direction of the online and direct mail program; foundation and corporate grant-writing, tracking and evaluation; newsletter production with response functionality; and an annual report of contributors to FSW.
  • Work with internal technology team to optimize use and maintenance of database for gift recording, processing, tracking, acknowledgement and reporting purposes, and to ensure accurate interpretation and evaluation of data tracking donor participation and program results.
  • Oversee training of all fundraising volunteers.
  • Perform other duties or responsibilities as required by the President & CEO.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Build infrastructure for the Development Department, creating written plans and measurements for each revenue line to track, evaluate success. Track data for dashboard management tool.
  • Direct activities, develop performance goals and evaluate the performance for all personnel.
  • Establish comprehensive work plans with Development Department team members, keeping them motivated and focused in securing upgraded gifts to the annual fund with appropriate volunteer staffing. Ensure appropriate evaluation of these efforts and success of the annual campaign.
  • Ensure Development Staff is engaging prospects and providing stewardship for current donors.

Requirements

Technical Competencies

  • Understanding and passion for FSW’s mission and the ability to communicate the unique aims and values of the organization to major donors and prospects.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising and public relations in the non-profit sector is required. For profit experience helpful.
  • Demonstrated success fundraising in a growing organization.
  • A self-starter, with a proven track record of successful fundraising, media relations, social media, and excellent communications skills.
  • Planned giving and capital campaign record of success.
  • Conversant in all areas of e-fundraising and online marketing communications with experience in implementing digital campaigns using email, video, social media, etc.
  • Ability to provide oversight and strategic direction in identifying/implementing new strategies.
  • Ability to prepare a strong business case, recommend and implement appropriate solutions.
  • A minimum of a four-year bachelor’s degree is required. CFRE certification, an MPA, MBA or Masters of Social Service Administration degree or the equivalent preferred.

  • Confidence in managing differing points of view, communicating a position and influencing change to drive growth.
  • Ability to maintain respect for an organization’s tradition, brand and culture while initiating and leading value added change to drive organizational growth.
