FSW Launches RideConnect, A Transportation Referral Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
9/27/11

Mount Kisco – Family Services of Westchester is pleased to announce the launch of a new transportation referral program called RideConnect. Staff members at RideConnect are dedicated to finding the fastest and most cost-effective transportation options to meet the needs of older adults, the disabled and home health professionals in Westchester County. While anyone living in Westchester can contact RideConnect, transportation providers will be based primarily in seven towns in Northern Westchester: Bedford, Lewisboro, Mount Kisco, Pound Ridge, North Salem, North Castle and Somers.
“Bedford (39 square miles), Somers (33 square miles) and other towns in Northern Westchester cover a broad geographic area, so taxi services can be expensive,” notes Karen Ganis, Program Director of RideConnect. “In addition, there are few public transportation options so residents in Northern Westchester who do not drive or have access to a car have little mobility,” adds Ganis. The program’s extensive database of providers will include taxis/limousines, municipal/town services, volunteer/church/temple transportation services. Callers can choose to ride anywhere in the areas covered by the transportation providers: the hairdresser, supermarket, doctors’ appointments, cultural events or family visits.
The RideConnect call center will be staffed from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm and includes a Spanish-speaking transportation counselor as well. An interactive website, where users can input their desired travel time, date and destination, is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “We are looking forward to providing a caring voice and useful information so that seniors, the disabled and home health workers can be independent and find affordable transportation in order to lead rich, fulfilling lives, visiting friends, enjoying a movie or just getting to the doctor,” adds Ganis. There are no additional service charges associated with RideConnect. Travelers only need to pay the fare charged by the transportation provider they choose.
Statistics show that this transportation referral service is needed in Northern Westchester. There are approximately 13,000 adults over the age of 60 and 7,000 over the age of 75 in the seven-town service area. Since many of these adults no longer drive, RideConnect will enable these residents to reconnect with their communities.
